Tucked inside The Remains of Henry Kirke White
Reunited — it went back to its owner or their family.
Maria Branwell, mother of the Brontë sisters, owned a copy of The Remains of Henry Kirke White that survived a shipwreck on its way to her before she married Patrick Brontë. Tucked inside were two unpublished manuscripts by the young Charlotte: a story fragment set in 1833 under her alter ego Lord Charles Wellesley, and a poem from the children’s imaginary world, in handwriting so tiny it took months to read. Santa Barbara dealer Ronald Randall sold the book to the Brontë Society, returning it to Haworth in 2015.
