Letter· 1945

A sealed wartime love letter, opened seventy years on

By the Editors · As reported by Fox News, 6 March 2014

Sheila Polk found a sealed envelope between the pages of a history of wartime broadcasting she had bought at a Florida thrift shop. It was dated May 26, 1945, from Sgt. Albert C. Alm Jr. at the Army Airfield in Palm Springs to Pfc. Helen Rothurmel of the 555th WAC Squadron at Love Field, Dallas. She waited until she had confirmed that both had died before opening it. The letter opened with a line from a popular song of the day and went on, tenderly, from there. Neither family knew of the romance.
